I have more than an interest in
voice-overs--infatuation would
probably be the more fitting
word. My fascination began as
a child listening to Danny Dark
say "Come on home to the
NBC television network!" Ernie
Anderson's signature "The
Looooove Boat," and Mark
Elliott's brief but beautiful "This
is CBS." Of course, I didn't
know any of their names back
then, but there was something
about the timbre of those
voices that spoke to me and
made me want to do more than
watch the networks they were
promoting, they made me
aspire to someday be the voice
behind the product.
Now, I don't claim to have the "Voice of God" that those guys
had (maybe someday, if I keep taking my vitamins!), and each
of them reached their voice-over zeniths in the '80s, when
"announcing" was very much en vogue, but there's a lot the
voice-over talents of today can learn from the talents of
yesterday (I should state that although Dark and Anderson have
both passed away, Elliott continues his successful career as the
voice of Disney). These men and others may have been more of
announcers than what's sought after in today's market, but all did
an awesome job of selling the products they represented by
personifying what it was they were endorsing. In other words,
Anderson wasn't simply the voice of "The Love Boat," he was
"The Love Boat," at least to my young ears. He sold it so well
that those of us who watched American television in the late 70s
through mid '80s can still hear him say it in our minds. And his
signature delivery always made me want to watch the show.
Now that's an effective voice-over! The same for Dark and
Elliott: their warm deliveries became the embodiment of the
networks they were promoting. These guys cut through the
clutter and they always did it with conviction. As I wrote in the
welcome on the main page, I believe conviction for the product
is the main ingredient in the recipe of a great voice- over. Hire
me for your project, and I'll "sell it" as if though it were my own,
because while I'm reading it, it will be my own. That's the
VoiceGuyBry guarantee!
If you're wondering about my training, I have almost 10 years
experience in commercial voice-overs. Additionally, I've taken
acting classes on improvisation and commercial acting as well
as voice-over specific classes from the fine folks at Radio
Garage Productions and Such a Voice. These, along with some
excellent books, are great resources if you're looking to break
into the exciting world of voice-overs.
Thanks so much for visiting VoiceGuyBry Productions! I wish
you the best in all your endeavours: just remember to do what
you enjoy with passion and conviction, and you'll do it well.
